Operation ALWAYS ON THE BRIGHT SIDE 2025

This post is to provide additional information about the volunteer opportunities previously announced. This is part 1 of 3 where we will review the upcoming 2025 Volunteer Schedule to help you decide which opportunity you would like to apply for.

During weeks 2-6 in the May and June calendar (check our Volunteer page to see a reminder of these dates), where there are two volunteer spots available, we are seeking a 1st assistant keeper and a 2nd assistant keeper who will work with Jill, the head keeper, to perform the 24/7 watch duty.

Though historically accurate, this number for us represents a "skeleton crew" of sorts compared to the number of workers we typically have had on station during past operations.

This is the first time we will be on site this early in the season. Because we were closed in 2024, in addition to the 24/7 watch schedule, this "skeleton crew" will also take up duties such as interior cleaning, organizing and taking inventory, resealing the bedroom walls, and other tasks determined once we get out there and make an assessment. Also a main reason for us being out there this early is to deter the cormorants from inhabiting the exterior of the station. Having a visible presence there will help accomplish this. Therefore, the head, 1st and 2nd assistant keepers will be performing combined watch duties and station prep duties during these specific weeks.

As mentioned in previous posts, we anticipate the midge flies to hatch during this time. Large midge fly swarms will likely keep us indoors a lot, unless it is windy. Lighthouse duty doesn't always conform to the idyllic romantic pictures. Just be informed of what volunteering during these weeks could be like. Don't say you weren't warned!
